How to choose an AI consultant in Dubai, and what to ask first
A practical guide for UAE founders and CEOs: what a good AI consultant should do, the questions to ask before you hire one, and the warning signs to avoid.
Every week there seem to be more AI consultants in Dubai. Some are excellent. Some are selling a tool they already decided you need. Here is how to tell the difference before you spend money.
A good AI consultant starts with your business, not the tool
The first meeting should be about your problems: where time is wasted, where customers wait, which numbers you can’t see. If the conversation opens with a product demo, you are talking to a salesperson.
A useful first session sounds like this:
- What are your three priorities for the next 12 months?
- Which tasks does your team repeat every day?
- Where does work wait for someone?
- Where is your customer data today?
Five questions to ask before you hire
- What will you look at before recommending any tool? The answer should include your processes, your data and your team, not just your software.
- How will we measure success? Expect a specific number: hours saved, response time, conversion rate, cost per order.
- What happens if we’re not ready for AI? An honest consultant will tell you to fix the foundations first, even if that means a smaller project for them.
- Who on my team will own this after you leave? If nobody owns it, adoption fades within three months.
- What’s the smallest pilot we could run? Good advice starts small, proves value, then scales.
Warning signs
- A fixed recommendation before they understand your business.
- Promises of “full automation” or replacing whole teams.
- No plan for training or ownership.
- No discussion of data privacy. In the UAE, customer data handling deserves a proper conversation.
What a first engagement should give you
At minimum: a clear picture of where you are today, a short list of fixes ranked by payback, and one pilot with a number attached. Anything vaguer than that is a presentation, not a plan.
Start with a readiness check
Before you speak to anyone, answer ten quick questions in the free AI Readiness Scorecard. It shows which area is holding you back: strategy, processes, data, people or tools. If you want the full picture, the AI Readiness Audit scores 25 criteria and ranks your top five fixes.
So, how might we choose AI help the same way we’d choose any important hire: by results, not by promises?
